CREATING INFORMATION AS A PROCESS

Source: Shutterstock

Information in any format is produced to transmit a message and is shared through a selected method. Iterative processes for research, creation, review and dissemination of information vary, and the resulting product reflects these differences. From blogs to news and academic articles, understanding the format leads to better research.

Learning goals

^

Articulate the capabilities and limitations of information developed through various creation processes.

^

Evaluate the fit between the process of creating an information product and a particular need for information.

^

Articulate traditional and emerging processes of information creation and dissemination in a particular discipline.

^

Recognize that information can be perceived differently, depending on the format in which it is developed.

^

Recognize the implications of information formats that contain static or dynamic information.

^

Monitor the value that is assigned to different types of information products in different contexts.

^

Transfer knowledge of capabilities and limitations to new types of information products.

^

Develop, in its own creation processes, an understanding that your choices impact the purposes for which you will use the product of information and the message it conveys.

Support resources

^

A guide that explains the process by which the information is published.

^

Presentation that summarizes the concept threshold.

Use them according to your need!

Recommended activities

^

Use the following table to describe font types:

Type/Format
How do you create it?
Who can create it?
Is there a review process? Should there be?
What is the best use of the information in this format?
How can I locate the information in this format?
(Example: blog)
^

Assign students to identify the format of the sources they find for a particular research project and explain why the formats chosen are appropriate for the need for information.

^

Ask students to transform the information they have created in one format to another (example from a blog to an academic article), and to write a reflection on what they should consider as they go through the process.
