Digital Skills for 21st Century Librarians

 

The Consortium of Metropolitan Libraries better known by its acronym COBIMET received a $219,000.00 grant from the Institute of Museum and Libraries for the development of a Digital Competency Certification for Librarians and other information professionals. This 3-year project will develop a Digital Competency Certification based on the European Digital Competency Framework DIGCOMP. The framework covers the skills needed to be competent in digital environments.

It will cover the knowledge, skills and attitudes that must be possessed to effectively use digital media. Through five modules, the certification will address skill areas such as:

 

  • Information and information literacy
  • Communication and collaboration
  • Creation of digital content
  • Digital Security
  • Troubleshooting

Competency 1

Information and information literacy

Description

To articulate information needs, to locate and retrieve data, information and digital content. To judge the relevance of the source. To store, manage and organize data, information and digital content.

Competency 2

Digital Communication and Collaboration

Description

Interact, communicate and collaborate through digital technologies while being aware of cultural and generational diversity. Participate in society through public and private digital services and participatory citizenship.

Competency 3

Content creation

Description

To create and edit digital content to enhance and integrate information and content into an existing body of knowledge while understanding how copyright and licensing apply.

Competency 4

 

Digital Security

Description

To protect devices, content, personal data and privacy in digital environments. To protect physical and psychological health, and to learn about digital technologies for social welfare and social inclusion.

Competency 5

 

Troubleshooting

h

Description

Identify needs and problems, and solve conceptual problems and problematic situations in digital environments. To use digital tools to innovate processes and products. To keep up with digital evolution.
