In celebration of Preservation Week, we are pleased to share our new publication: the Glossary of Terms on the Preservation of Documentary Collections (1st edition), developed by the Puerto Rico Center for Conservation and Restoration (CENCOR).
This initiative is part of our project—“Papel se Conserva: Initiative for the Preservation of Paper-Based Heritage, Books, and Photographic Materials”—which aims to expand our institutional reach in the preservation of documentary heritage.
The glossary addresses the need to establish a common, clear, and accessible language in the field of records management and preservation. Recognizing the linguistic and cultural diversity of Latin America and the Caribbean, the publication includes terms in Spanish and English, as well as variants, synonyms, and cross-references that facilitate their understanding and use.
Its development involved a rigorous research process, based on the consultation of specialized glossaries, encyclopedias, and technical resources from institutions in Latin America, Europe, and the United States. Organized into ten thematic chapters, it covers everything from fundamental concepts of management, conservation, and preservation to specific areas such as materials, tools, deterioration agents, and treatment techniques.
Notably, the glossary includes a specialized section on photographic materials and collections, making it a unique contribution among existing international reference resources.
This glossary is intended as a reference tool and a starting point, designed to support professionals in the field, students, and the general public interested in the preservation of documentary heritage.
