Assessment of Needs and Digital Preservation Among Peer Public Libraries and Municipal Archives in the Metropolitan Area of Puerto Rico
COBIMET received a $118,333.19 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to assess the digital preservation needs of municipal documentary archives and public libraries located in the metropolitan area of Puerto Rico. This project included interviews with archives managers in Puerto Rico using the Digital Preservation Coalition's Rapid Assessment Model, which determines digital preservation capabilities and helps to make informed decisions to improve performance. An online, bilingual (Spanish and English) and freely accessible database system was developed and implemented to make the data collected publicly available. In this way, states and U.S. territories will benefit from this database, which facilitates the assessment of archival needs.

Why?
This project supports one of the main objectives of public archives and documentation centers: to preserve the documents and other materials they hold. This is an important grant to study digital preservation capabilities in our metropolitan area municipalities.

How?
Interviewing the managers of these archives using the Digital Preservation Coalition's Rapid Assessment Model, which identifies digital preservation capabilities and helps inform actions to improve their performance.

Who?
Administrators of a municipal archive (public and private) or of a public library that houses historical materials and is located in the municipalities of San Juan, Carolina, Guaynabo, Bayamón, Dorado, Cataño, Trujillo Alto or Toa Baja.
In addition, institutions interested in how to access the free-to-use DPC-RAM database system to assess their institution's digital preservation capabilities.

Standards
The Digital Preservation Coalition Rapid Assessment Model (DPC RAM) is used because it provides a quick, standardized and practical method for assessing an organization's digital preservation capabilities. It helps identify strengths, weaknesses and priorities for improvement, ensuring that actions are aligned with international best practices and standards.
