THE SEARCH AS A STRATEGIC EXPLORATION

Localizing information requires a combination of inquiry, discovery, and chance. There is no way that fits all sources to find necessary information. Information discovery is not linear and iterative, requiring the use of a wide range of information sources and flexibility to find alternative paths as a new understanding develops.

Recommended activities

Ask students to choose a topic, develop key search terms, and use two different databases to locate information about their topic. Ask them to compare the results in terms of quantity, source types (e.g. government, education, academic, business), order/sequence of results, and relevance. Locate students who used different databases with the same topics to compare results.

Assign students to identify and use subject headers after performing a keyword search; after which they write a paragraph about the differences between the subject and keyword search.
